The guy was universally looked at as a genius with both Democrats and Republicans stumbling over themselves to suck the guys shlong each time he gave Congressional testimony.

Fast forward to now and Alan Greenspan is the spectre at the feast: widely seen as one of the people most responsible for the economic clusterfuck the world finds itself in.
As with most things, the truth probably lies somewhere in the middle.
Greenspan, a Republican, bought the whole dogma of deregulation and the 'magic of the free market' hook, line, and sinker.
He consistently discounted human greed and malfeasance and the incredibly bad effect those two hard to quantify intangibles have on the economy.
