Put simply, Spector is part of a dying, nearly extinct breed of national political animal: the moderate, northeastern, pragmatic Rockefeller Republican. If he wants to win reelection in 2010, as this article illustrates, it looks like he needs to leave the Republican party and become a Democrat.
As the Republican party has become increasingly radicalized, guys like Spector are part of a vanishing political constituency.
He's going to be running in 2010 agains Pat Toomey, the same loony-tune fundamentalist, Rush Limbaugh Republican he barely beat in the 2006 GOP Pennyslvania primary.
As we saw a few years back with Joe Lieberman, never underestimate the actions that a cornered, desperate Senator will take.
