On July 3, 1979, the Ixtoc I oil well in the Bay of Campeche, leased by the Mexican oil company Pemex, exploded and began spilling an estimated 138 million gallons of oil into th Gulf of Mexico over the next 9 months. The spill was eventually stopped in March 1980 by drilling two relief wells and a cement cap.
