Joke of The Day, 5/30/11

JAY LENO
Republican Tim Pawlenty announced yesterday he’s running for president of the United States. Yeah, I don’t care either. You know, I don’t want to say Tim Pawlenty is boring, but his Secret Service code name — Al Gore

Texas Governor Rick Perry Flirts With Run

Hey, why not!  The GOP field is currently so pathetic, Minor Ripper himself is showing up as a contender in some polls....

Seriously, though, the quick skinny on Rick Perry:  he is a glib, good looking, tough talking total lightweight/empty suit:  think of a mix of Dan Quayle with George W. Bush....

So in other words he should fit right in with the current crop of candidates and would become an immediate front runner.....

Picture of the Day: DSK and The Obamas

....a picture is worth a thousand words

Palin Gets Itchy Trigger Finger

The only thing that would make Democrats more ebullient about President Obama's 2012 re-election chances would be if Sarah Palin did indeed decide to toss her hat into the ring.  Which, almost unfathomably, it appears she is getting close to doing.....

Obviously we could go on and on about what a joke Sarah Palin is, but what isn't really so funny is the fact that tens of millions of people actually voted for her as Vice President last time around.

You know, a heartbeat away from the presidency and all....

But seriously the only thing her candidacy would do would be to make the current GOP lineup even more of a real life Saturday Night Live skit.  You've already got Herman Cain, the pizza guy...Newt, Ron Paul....

Run Sarah Run!!

Is LinkedIn Worth $8 Billion?

There was big news on the social networking front last week as LinkedIn went public...The stock quickly more than doubled in price from $45 to $90 a share reminding many of the Internet bubble back in the late 90's...

Hard to believe that was over a decade ago, right??

Someone told me that the whole social networking phenomenon can be summed up neatly like this:

Facebook is about your past, Twitter about your present....and LinkedIn your future.

That kind of makes sense, and I do think LinkedIn provides a very good service.  Facebook, on the other hand, I don't quite understand.  And Twitter seems to me to be nonsense.

What's everyone else think??

Huntsman and the Bushes

Want to know how to characterize former Utah governor, Ambassador to China, and now Republican candidate for president Jon Huntsman?

Think George Bush Senior--aka the Bush president who had a brain.

Remember he, too, was Ambassador to China before becoming elected president.  And like Huntsman Bush Sr. wasn't some fire breathing, hard right wing dunce cap Tea Bagger, either....the type of which unfortunately have been the Republican du jour in this country for quite some time recently....

As the economy improves, though, evidence is mounting that this silly Tea Party phenomenon has peaked...Presidential elections are won in the middle.

Keep your eye on the emerging popularity of Jon Huntsman...the old school moderate Republican (remember those??) modeled after George Bush Sr.

Clear proof of the tea party on the wane....

Video: Obama Has a Guiness in Ireland

Mitch Daniels Decides Against Run

It was always a stretch (pardon the pun) to actually think the diminutive, bland technocrat governor of Indiana Mitch Daniels would catch fire, sweep to the Republican nomination, and then topple his polar opposite President Obama next November...

The media, dying for a competitive race to boost their shrinking ratings, briefly made Mitch Daniels the "Republican Savior!"...."The economic genius who is 'serious' about the economy!"

You've got to be kidding me, right? This is the same guy who served as the chief economic advisor to George W. Bush, correct?  The president who inherited the biggest budget surplus in the nation's history from Bill Clinton and quickly turned it into the biggest deficit in our nation's history....

Some economic genius!!  More like a mad scientist--

There was also a big, ugly skeleton in the Daniels closet having to do with his marriage:  he and his wife had four kids, divorced, then she moved out to California and got remarried.  She then divorced that guy and remarried Daniels....

A bit more media digging into that story, inevitable in the white hot glare of a presidential campaign, might have been juicy....

First Trump.  Then Huckabee..... Now Mitch Daniels....  Who's left for the GOP??

Sarah Palin?

Obama Being Blasted from both Left and Right--Must Mean He's Doing a Good Job

President Obama has been evil incarnate since the moment he won the election in 2008 for the right side of the American political spectrum--nothing new there.

To the right wing, Obama can't do anything right.  He has been hounded and criticized for refusing to release the Osama bin Laden death photos, for Christ's sake....

But the withering attacks he has been taking from the left recently are a bit more of an eyebrow raiser....Specifically fellow African American luminary Cornell West.  And then yesterday from renowned hippie limousine liberal actor Peter Fonda--from Cannes, France of all places.

Keep in mind, presidential elections are won in the middle...

Gingrich Implodes

Well, it was always a big stretch for Newt to be running for president in the first place....I mean who would ever vote for this unlikable freak like him in the first place?

The guy pretty much introduced the toxic partisanship we all take for granted now back in the mid 80's as a junior Congressman from Georgia.

He then of course became Speaker of The House and had the balls to prosecute Bill Clinton for the Lewinsky affair, while he himself was banging his very own intern while married.  That intern eventually became his third wife, Callista Gingrich.

This time around Gingrich has managed to perform a seemingly impossible political feat:  that is to become loathed not only by the far left--that's pretty much always been the case, but also now the far right after his remarks about the GOP's plan to eliminate Medicare....

Well done Newt!  Your implosion, assuredly, will be enjoyed by politicos across the spectrum....

Huntsman Garners Buzz

In the deep black void that is the GOP race for president this time around, political prognosticators have been searching for a pulse or any other sign of life...

Newt?  Dead.  Trump?  Gone.  Palin?  Please....

This situation lends itself perfectly for the 'dark horse' candidate who no one had heard about previously, who then storms on to the scene and has the media fall in love with him.

Think John McCain in 2000, Bill Clinton in 1992....Gary Hart in 1988.

I could be wrong, but I see signs of this happening in real time with former Utah governor and Obama appointed ambassador to China Jon Huntsman.

He's incredibly personally wealthy (his dad invented the Big Mac packaging?) speaks Mandarin, is good looking and telegenic (unlike Mitch Daniels), isn't stiff as a board (like Tim Pawlenty)....and oh yeah has worked for three presidents from both parties.

In other words, quite appealing on the surface to the moderate voters who decide presidential elections....

Like Mitt Romney he is Morman, though, and gasp...he worked for Obama!!!  Which of course makes him evil to legions of hardcore Obama haters on the right....

So the trick for Huntsman will be to get the fire breathing Tea Bagger Republican voter from South Carolina to vote for him....

Which might be too tough a mountain for him to climb.  But for now, keep your eye on Jon Huntsman--GOP presidential candidate on the move....

French Bitch and Whine About Treatment of Strauss-Kahn

I've been reading that many elites and commentators in France are 'shocked' and 'outraged' by the treatment of American authorities towards the accused rapist and current IMF chief Dominique Strauss Kahn  (he is so well known in France that he is referred to merely as 'DSK')....

"He is being treated cruelly and viciously by the Americans...."...."our system is better than the Americans"...."Why do they torture ham by having him photographed handcuffed??"

Keep in mind this dude was the presumed next President of France....Imagine John McCain getting arrested in 2008 for trying to violently rape a stewardess in Italy right before the US elections or something--I mean this shit is pretty shocking---

But still, "Oh the Americans are savages!!  The perp walk is so humiliating...."  "This would never happen in France..."

My advice to the French is to get over themselves.  This is the US of A and this weirdo pervert is accused of committing a very serious crime on US soil.  There was apparently blood found on the hotel bed.  This freak could very well be a monster and you guys let him rise through your ranks to become nearly president.

See that picture on the top right?  That's a perp walk.  You get that whether you're a small time crook or the biggest politician in the world.  No kings, no queens, no friggin royalty or royal treatment in New York City, USA.

So pardon us while we Americans clean up your shit....

Pawlenty Gains Traction

Trust me, this is not a headline that brings happiness to Republican party heavyweights...

More like indigestion.

Tim Pawlenty, the stiff, boring governor of Minnesota, makes Al Gore seem exciting...

And the fact that Pawlenty is being mentioned  is only because of the sheer dearth of any serious candidate having emerged so far...

Mitt Romney is busy serving as a pinata by the Wall Street Journal and other right wing outlets due to his health care plan...

Ok, so fast forward to November 2012: Obama versus Pawlenty....

Who's your money on?

Herman Cain: Republican du Jour

If you happened to miss the first Republican presidential debate of the season the other day, you can be forgiven.

Not too many people nation wide watched it....

However, among the chattering GOP classes, apparently one minor candidate--former Godfather's (?) pizza CEO Herman Cain, stuck out among the anemic class....

Which, of course, speaks volumes about the disastrous state of the current crop of Republican presidential candidates...

Why guys like Cain, Rick Santorum, Buddy Roemer and Ron Paul even run for president is kind of an interesting question....I mean none of them have a prayer in hell of winning the nomination.  So why all the hassle???

The answer in many cases is simple:

Higher speaking fees.

The GOP's Ron Paul Conundrum

Ron Paul announced today that he is running for the GOP nomination for president again this time around....

All of which, of course, is patently bad and unhealthy for the Republican party, just like it was in 2008....

You see Paul has an approximately 0.0% chance of getting the nomination.  But the guy for some reason has a fiercely loyal following, made up mostly of disenchanted, off the radar Americans who yearn for the simplicity of "Less government, less taxes, that's it." brings...

Expect the guy to soak up every morsel of media attention that he can get--and with his outlandish statements he gets plenty.

But in the end all his presence in the field will do nothing except take away precious time and recourses from guys like Tim Pawlenty and Mitt Romney--who actually have a prayer of beating President Obama next November....

Romney Struggles with Health Care

It will be interesting to see what Republican primary voters wind up doing with Mitt Romney.  After all, his health care plan for Massachusetts  was basically the template that President Obama used for his national plan, enacted over furious objection to the very tea bagging, fire breathing GOP primary voter that Romney hopes will now support him....

I guess he's hoping they have a short memory, and don't read a lot.  And he's probably exactly right on those two scores: The tea-bagger's preferred dose of media is three hours of Rush Limbaugh on the radio mid-day, followed up with Hannity on Fox News on the boob tube at night...

Back to Romney...the guy's not called Multiple Choice Mitt for nothing:  He's flipped on abortion, taxes, war and peace...you name it.  Health Care is merely his latest contortionist act.

Very different than George W. Bush.  And a little like his fellow Massachusetts politician John Kerry.

Go ahead and connect those dots....

Newt Finds Jesus

Ahhh Newt Gingrich....

The guy who had the cajones to serve his first wife with divorce papers while she was recovering from cancer surgery in the hospital...

And the guy who led Congress into impeaching President Clinton for the Monica Lewinsky affair, at the same time that he himself was banging his 20 something year old intern...

While married to his second wife, that is....

But, alas, Newt has found God and is now suddenly very devout.  And his third marriage to the above said former intern, Callista Gingrich, is apparently just blissfully harmonious--indeed a model for others....

As you can see from the picture, they look perfectly normal and happy.  When I look at that, I see the very essence of 'family values'--

Just in time for the South Carolina Republican primary!!

Coming: The First Twitter Hedge Fund

It will be interesting to see if/how this works out.

Big difference between being a computer nerd and a guy who can trade stocks and make money consistently, however....

It's an effort to sort the world's growing zillions of text messages, twitters, e-mails, Facebooks, LinkedIns, FourSquareds, etc. into sortable info that can perhaps help predict future actions..

Anyone have any thoughts on this?.

Bin Laden Home Videos Surface

Well, this dude clearly was not throwing wild keg parties in his 10 plus years on the lam... Kind of pathetic, actually...watching old videos of yourself in a cramped hideout--on a TV and VCR setup from 1979..dying your beard brown!

Waiting Breathlessly For......Mitch Daniels?

Um.....ok....

That's him in the middle there, by the way...all 5'6 of him.  He's currently the governor of Indiana.

This is who the GOP thinks is going to lead them into the promised land next November and topple President Obama?

This is the 'smart, serious', 'game changing' candidate who the GOP hierarchy is breathlessly waiting to save them??

If you say so.

First GOP Presidential Debate is Tonight--Lineup is Pathetic

Herman Cain.  Buddy Roemer.  Gary Johnson.....

You'd be forgiven for wondering to yourself, "Who are they?  Are they cashiers at the local Wal-Mart?  Barristas at Starbucks maybe?  A law firm??" ....

You are not alone.  Indeed probably 99% of eligible American voters have no earthly idea who the above people are---

But guess what?  They are all Republican candidates for president and they will all be participating in the first organized political debate of the season tonight in South Carolina.

You know you have big, big problems when Tim Pawlenty is the headliner for any political event, anywhere, let alone the nation's first political debate for the candidates who hope to replace President Obama next year...

Wow.  Talk about a snapshot in time...

I guess if you are a hardcore Republican though you can take solace in the fact that there is, literally, now way to go but up from here....

New Taxi Cabs on Way to Gotham

Hmmmm....

If you talk to the cabbies, they will all tell you--as in 100% of them...how much they love their current Ford Crown Victorias.  Easy to fix, simple to operate, etc.

This new design--built by Nissan by the way (so much for American pride), is going to take a long time to get used to....

Glow of Bin Laden Death will Fade Quickly for Obama

President Obama is riding high after aggressively going after and killing terrorist kingpin Osama bin Laden gangsta style a few days ago...

Shot to the head.

However in the face of a determined, brutal opposition and a very slowly, haltingly recovering economy, Obama still faces a challenge to get re-elected next year.

But alas, as this blog is fond of saying....Money talks and bullshit walks.

The Intrade political marketplace showed Obama gaining 10% percentage points soon after the bin Laden death was announced, but then dropped 8.5% off that to settle in at about a 2.5% more likely chance that he gets elected than before to a 62.5% likelihood....

2.5% isn't all that much, is it??

After 10 Long Years, Obama Finally 'Smokes Out' Bin Laden

Hey!  Not bad for an illegitimate Kenyan born Muslim president, eh??!

For you wingnut freaks out there secretly disappointed that this happened on Obama's watch (Donald Trump, Rush Limbaugh...Glenn Beck, you know who you are.)--the author of that picture on the right...millions of other American racists....

So very very sorry....

The 2012 Republican nomination process for president has officially become a total, 100% waste of time...

Minor Ripper has as much of a chance of being elected the next President of the United States in 2012 as a Republican does...

After 10 long years and thousands of American military deaths in counterproductive, dumb wars (Iraq)....President Obama and the American military has finally gotten the job done.

Mission, finally....

Accomplished.
